Hiking in the mountains of Andalusia, Malaga province
Andalusia is known for its beautiful nature and nature parks and its beautiful hiking trails. Andalusia is 3 times larger than the Netherlands and throughout the area you will find beautiful areas for outdoor. It goes too far to mention all the beautiful nature areas, therefore we limit ourselves to some of the most beautiful hiking areas in the province of Malaga and the surroundings of Alhaurin el Grande.
Save Municipal de senderos de Alhaurin el Grande
(The municipal paths of Alhaurin el Grande):
From almost the backyard of our holiday homes you can participate in these different hiking trails on the Sierra de Mijas (Mount of Mijas). The walking routes are from easy to difficult routes. See also Walking at Alhaurin el Grande .
Sierra Mijas:
Endless hiking, that is what you can do in the Sierra de Mijas. This is the mountain range where you can see the white village of Mijas-Peublo from far away. A road (A387) runs above the village where you can park your car and where all routes start. The ‘Acceso Ermita del Calvario’ access is the most used. A few hundred meters further in the direction of Alhaurín is the ‘Puente Colorado’ entrance. Seven varied routes have been plotted on this mountain side. Everyone can walk there because there are short routes, long, flat, steep, difficult and easy routes. You could even walk from here on the Senda de Málaga (GR249) to Ojén or Istán behind Marbella. The nice thing about walking here is that you are constantly treated to a beautiful panorama of the coast. In the beginning you can still hear the pleasant village sounds from Mijas-Pueblo and later you see Fuengirola in the distance. If you go a little higher, you will see the (sometimes snowy) peaks of the Sierra de Las Nieves in a westerly direction or those of the Sierra Nevada to the east. The Atlas Mountains in Morocco can also show up on clear days.

Sierra Calamorro
Near Benalmádena on the mountain Sierra Calamorro (starting point cable car), at more than 770 meters altitude you have a wide view over the Mediterranean Sea, the Sierra Nevada and on a clear day also on Gibraltar and the Moroccan coast. At the top there are three hiking trails that lead you to different vantage points (Mirardor). In “the valley of the eagles” you can see birds of prey such as eagles, owls and vultures up close.
From the top you can cycle or walk down, back to Benalmadena or to Alhaurin de la Torre. The descent to Benalmadena Pueblo takes you about two hours via a narrow path, the R1.
El Torcal
You can walk beautifully in El Torcal. There are 3 routes from 1.5 km to 4.5 km, from easy to advanced routes. El Torcal is located in the surroundings of the village of Antequera and the Caminto del Rey and is located north of Malaga, about half an hour away. El Torcal is a spectacular and beautiful nature reserve due to the special breathtaking rocks and beautiful nature. Numerous flowers grow, including many orchids, peonies and lilies.
Barranco Blanco
Barranco Blanco is located in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas between Alhaurín el Grande and Coín.Literally ‘the white canyon’. In reality, this nature reserve is a small paradise. It can be busy on hot days. You arrive there via the A387 in the direction of Coín. About 5 kilometers after Alhaurín el Grande you turn left into a forest road. After two kilometers you can park and descend to the Alaminos River at the bridge. There you immediately see a pool with clear water and a waterfall (not during dry times unfortunately) of two meters high. Here you can look for a nice cool down or if you feel like it, you walk further upstream and already bathe as far as you want and can handle.
Sierra Nevada:
The Sierra Nevada is about an hour’s drive from Alhaurin el Grande. The Sierra Nevada has the highest mountain on the Spanish mainland, up to 3,500 meters high. In the spring, summer and autumn you can enjoy hiking, horse riding and cycling in the national park and adventurous travelers can even go mountain climbing. In the winter, the Sierra Nevada is a popular winter sports destination.
Caminito del Rey:
Here you can participate in a beautiful spectacular walk between mountains and river gorge at an altitude of approximately 100 meters. See on our site Caminito del Rey .
Of course there are several hiking routes such as Montes de Malaga, a gorge walk in Granada, La cañada del lobo at Torremolinos (The wolf’s canyon). For more great hiking trails, see www.especial-life.com (articles “the backyard of”)
Sendero El Satillo
Sendero El Satillo: As part of the “Gran Senda de Málaga” (the long walk of Málaga), the village of Canillas de Aceituno in the province of Málaga is busy with plans for the improvement and extension of the El Saltillo walk. Metal walking paths have already been attached along the rocks and the route has been going for years, but now a special suspension bridge is being added.
The Sendero El Saltillo can be found in the Axarquia region of the province of Málaga and belongs to the municipality of Canillas de Aceituno.
For those who have already walked the Caminito del Rey, the Sendero El Saltillo is an ideal alternative. Enjoy the views, nature, walking along a modern aqueduct and finally the metal hiking trails that are attached to the rocks.
However, the El Saltillo gets a new impulse because a 54 meter long suspension bridge is added that is 5 meters high and 1.20 meters wide. This bridge should open mid-2020 according to the Diputación de Andalucía (Source www.spanjevadaag.com)
